First CROWD Funded Training held at Dharawada

By Vasudeva Sharma | Project Director

First Crowd Funded Training on Child Rights

18-19 July 2018, Karnatak University, Dharawada

‘All these days Child Rights was only a term, some set of good word’ said Rekha, participant in the Child Rights training programme at the end of the programme, ‘today I understand that that it is not just some words to be used in talks but a serious matter to be implemented at the grassroots level’. Rekha is one of the 39 participants in the training programme on Child Rights held at Karnatak University, Dharawada on 18th and 19th July 2018 by CRT – Child Rights Trust. The programme was the first in the series of 6 such programmes to be orgnaised with the support of Crowd Funding through GlobalGiving and ImpactGuru. Mr. Vasudeva Sharma and Mr Nagasimha conducted the two days programme.

The group of 39 enthusiasts (19 females and 20 males) that included NGO front level workers, Govt., media, students of social work, law, criminology and journalism. They came from Bgalakote, Belagam, Vijayapura, Dharawada, Haveri and Gadag districts of the region. The programme was conducted in collaboration with Department of social work Karnatak University and KIDS a local organisation.

The programme included an introduction to situation of children in India and in particular Karnataka, understanding what a child is (sociological, Constitution, policy, legal, programmatic and from UN Conventions), rights and child rights; relating our field work to uphold the rights of the child (survival, health, nutrition, protection, development and participation) with specific reference to girl child, children with disabilities, children from rural India, urban poor and all other vulnerable sections and finally an individual action plan to take measures to uphold the rights of the child.

‘Now I relate theory and practice’ said Ms. Manjula a law student who was a member of a child rights club during her childhood and now a semi activist. ‘The programme has kindled my hunger for knowing more about Children and Child Rights’ she emphasised. Mr. Bharma who is into prevention of child marriages from Belagam felt that a two days programme is not enough and the programme should not just give an introduction but give a complete picture about the issue and the actions to be taken in collaboration with Govt and the public. Ms. Uma a ChildLine team member from Gadag felt that the programme has empowered her with information on the legal instruments and the existing child protection systems.

All the participants were given participation certificates in the presence of Chairman of the Social Work Department, Karnatak Uniersity, Dharawada and assured that we may plan to hold a follow up advanced programme.
