Project Report | May 12, 2016
The month that was March- April 2016

By Arpan Communications | Marketing & Communications

In the last year we have worked with over 18000 children through our PSE program. This figure is even more encouraging set against the target of 15000 that was decided in the year. Through the PSE program, we have reached out to 1778 teachers, and 15887 parents. Our work is not limited to only working with children and it is a great pleasure to share the substantial amount of work that we have been able to do with people in care giving relationships. Just in the last quarter, we have been able to reach out to 7176 children in schools717 teachers and 7175 parents.

Out of these numbers, our counsellors have addressed 823 children who have disclosed abuse. Almost half of these numbers, 409 children were addressed in the quarter.

We have provided long term training to over 380 individuals from the NGOs around the issues of Child Sexual Abuse, these NGOs while they work with children, do not have an orientation in dealing with children who have been abused and understanding their trauma. We hope that work with us has equipped them effectively. Out of these 384, we have reached out to 144 individuals in this quarter. Apart from that, we have reached out 63 teachers, training them about implementation of the PSE program in the year and 30 teachers in the quarter. With government officials and superintendents, the number is 494, with 35 of them in this quarter.

---------------------------------

We are gearing up for the new academic session now. Our modules for the 7th and 8th are ready.
A child who has been a part of the pilot shares his experience: "I learnt rights & safety, and I learnt about friends and family, something no one has taught me."

Popularly, we believe that older children are more empowered to protect themselves, but empowerment comes from knowledge not age.

When we talk about change, it is always in the context of children, our primary group. But sometimes, change comes to the teacher witnessing our Personal Safety Education programme. Teachers in some classes have taken up the same disciplining techniques taken up by our trainers, not of punishment but of positive reinforcement.

"I tell my class we will all sing together once the period is over, if they sit and listen to me. I realized that it works better than screaming at them and saves my energy as well."These are days that remind us what serendipity is and how it works fueling the passion to continue working!
