NICU is back in session!

In Haiti we are lucky enough that there was not a huge outbreak. Up to today we only have about 8000 cases of covid-19 since the initial lock down of the country. The biggest issue is that us dollars went up in Haiti. To the point that $1 us was equal to 120 gourdes. So things got more expensive for all the consumers. The sellers are not adjusting their prices even when the dollar dropped considerably. Since we buy all of our essentials in gourdes things are more expensive for us.

During quarantine we made some repairs to our NICU. We wanted to make sure that we were always ready and prepared for any circumstances. We received many new babies. We had the Ministry of Public health call us to admit Baby Malia to our NICU via ambulance. Baby Malia was a tiny baby and only weighed 2 lbs 15 oz. Her oxygen levels were really low but her coloring and heart rate were pretty strong. Our nurses made sure that she was giving all of the care needed to stay strong and healthy. She is doing well.

We received Baby Israel that was extremely malnourished. He is also blind. His mom came to us for help because she didn’t have the means to support him. Baby Israel is doing much better. He is getting stronger day by day.

We received twin baby girls named Baby Ruth and Baby Sarah. They were really tiny. They were on oxygen for about a week. Our nurses gave them an all around the clock care. They started getting stronger but sadly only one of them didn’t survived despite all of our efforts.

As stated by our executive Director during her interview with Orphans Treasure Box “At GLA, our primary goal is to provide exceptional neonatal care and a safe haven to the smallest, sickest, and most vulnerable children of Haiti.Sometimes this looks like short term care, sometimes this looks like providing home support, and sometimes this looks like permanent placement through adoption. Our specialized focus is in providing quality medical care to premature infants in an environment that is safe and supportive of the family unit. We encourage mothers, whenever physically able to live with us at GLA in a unit next to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, to provide primary care for their infant from day one.” We are able to continue fulfilling our mission because of your support.
