Our NICU here in the mountains of Haiti remains busy! We have cared for 9 babies over the past month and are so grateful to have the resources and funding to provide for their intensive medical requirements and daily needs.
Baby R arrived at GLA when she was one month old, weighing just 4 lbs 6oz. It is likely she was born premature, but did not initially receive any medical care. She was born with a cleft lip and as a result has suffered severe dehydration and malnutrition. She received intravenous therapy, medications and oxygen therapy, which helped to rehydrate and stabilize her. Her electrolytes were dangerously low on arrival and she was having heart arrhythmias and periods of low alertness. Balancing of electrolytes, specifically in Haiti with limited resources, is complicated and challenging. While her condition remained unstable for about 4 days, she has now completely recovered. Her electrolytes are stable and she is feeding with a bottle without any issues.
She will remain in inpatient care with us until she is able to receive surgery to correct her cleft lip and we can assure she will be strong enough to take milk feeds at home.
Your continuous support and donations empower us to provide life-saving treatment to babies like Baby R and we are so thankful for your generosity and partnership.
