And the babies just keep coming...

By Dixie Bickel, RN | Executive Director

Jackson Is finally eating and growing!
Jackson Is finally eating and growing!

Our NICU is full and the babies just keep coming!  There are very few NICU's in Haiti and GLA has been caring for premature babies for 14 years.  We need donations to keep the NICU functioning and caring for these babies.

We do not ask the Haitian families to pay for the care that the babies and their mothers receive.  Very few of the families have jobs or ways of paying for a large hospital bill. The average Haitian family lives on less than $350 USD per year.  That is not very much money! Many Haitian families live in remote rural areas and do not have access to medical services.

Sometimes we have had families arrive at our gates with their preemie babies and they have ridden 4 or more hours on motorcycles trying to get to us so that we can help them.  These families desperately want their babies to live and are willing to walk miles over rough mountainous trails to find help.

Many of our referrals are from hospitals located in Port-au-Prince who do not have nursery care or any form of Neonatal care.  When a premature baby is born, the hospitals call and ask GLA if we can take the baby in our care and then they call an ambulance to bring the baby to us.

We are able to provide free care because of people like you who make donations to GLA to help support our NICU located in the mountains above Port-au-Prince in the small village of Fort Jacques.  Without you, we could not continue to help these premature babies.  Thank you for helping!
