Dear Donors:
The project is now in use! Our local partner, the Kabiro Human Development Project (KHDP), formed a management committee and hired a clerk/custodian to keep the project clean, collect payments for use of the toilets and showers and keep the books. The project is slowly earning revenue that will be used to purchase supplies such as toilet paper, soap and cleaning materials. As people become accustomed to using the project, we anticipate that the revenue streams will increase and it will become feasible to upgrade the existing facilities by buying a lockable cash box and installing a more professional desk and seat for the clerk, preferably behind a partition. While the biodigester is filling with human waste and the project managers are anticipating the generation of methane that will permit use of the stoves in the kitchen, KHDP intends to use the refrigerator to store soft drinks for sale to people who visit the project. Once the methane supply is adequate to fuel the stoves, the refrigerator will be used by the ladies who rent the stoves for cooking. The sale of soft drinks will move to a refrigerator on the upper floor once the upper floor has been completed.
We are drafting a proposal for the second phase of the project, which will include completing the construction of the upper floor meeting and eating space, building a filter system so that the liquid waste from the biodigester can be treated on site and released safely into storm water drains, constructing a washing area where people can use the water from one of our water tanks to wash clothes and utensils, building a security fence around the project so that it will no longer be pummeled by soccer balls and, once the fence is built, repainting the exterior of the project.
Thanks again for your support. The money raised through GlobalGiving has been invaluable, especially in the context of troubleshooting. We couldn’t have finished phase one without it!
