MGGF is supplying Montessori materials and operational support for five schools located along the Ukrainian front line (Mykolayiv, Dnipro, Kharkiv, Sumy and Chernigiv). These areas are close to the fighting and thus are affected by near-constant shelling. These materials and support are part of a larger effort to help children traumatized by the Russian invasion.
Some 65 children spread across these five cities have joined with Montessori children in Montessori schools. Being in a calm Montessori environment, using self-correcting materials where the children have agency over their work has helped the children to have a sense of safety. Each of these children received between 120-150 hours of classroom time monthly.
During the past two years, hundreds of children suffered severe trauma from the loss of their caregivers, their homes and neighborhoods. Many schools sustained physical damage during the start of the war. Located as they are near the front line, they continue to hear the sounds of war. These 65 children are attending well-staffed and equipped Montessori environments. Certainly, not an ideal situation, but still one in which these students can begin to self-regulate and regain a bit of their childhood.
We are so grateful to all those who have helped us fund these Montessori efforts in Ukraine. They are truly helpful those most damaged by war.
