Help Mend A Broken Heart In Kenya

During this quarter, Take Heart Association Project (THAP) administration and staff joyfully continued to serve patients and families. Four children, age 4 months to 7 years underwent successful heart surgeries to correct anomalies of regurgitation, stenosis, and atresia of the Valves.

Patients, Angi and Marg received corrective procedures for congenital heart defects at Tenwek Hospital in Bomet, Kenya in March 2018.  In early April, Rimu was escorted to Egypt and received successful mitral valve replacement at Aswan Heart Hospital. She traveled back to Kenya from Egypt on April 26, 2018, and already had a home visit to ensure that she is making good recovery. Baby Aqui was sponsored by Mending Little Hearts, a UK-based Foundation to receive successful Cath lab procedure on May 2, 2018 at MP-Shah Hospital, Nairobi Kenya.

THAP also provided the following:

• Medicine: THAP provided 29 patients with post-surgery, sustaining medicine this quarter. 
• Medical Reviews: 47 children underwent medical reviews this quarter. The latest occurred on April 26-27 when 6 THAP patients were presented for screening at MP-Shah Hospital in Nairobi Kenya.  The screenings were conducted by Mending Little Hearts, a UK based Foundation.
• Accommodation: 32 patients were accommodated at the THAP Family Support Center in Nairobi this quarter. THAP also hosted a special patient from the Cameroon for two nights at the Center after the patient was operated on by Dr. Ron at Tenwek Hospital on March 31, 2018. Dr. Ron and his team appreciated the collaborative support given to this patient who had flown all the way from the Cameroon to Kenya for surgery.

Over the next 2 months THAP envisions Upcoming surgeries: (1) Baby Miri is scheduled for surgery in India later in May or early June. (2) Baby Fay has received sponsorship from Chain of Hope for open heart surgery at Aswan Heart Center in Egypt in May.

Sometimes it gets quite difficult, but THAP continues to fulfill its 2018 resolution of pushing harder for more stakeholders to work closely with us to ensure the children on the Waiting List receive the care they need.
