A lack of access to clean energy and use of traditional cooking systems have severe negative effects on health, especially among women and children, and on the environment. This five years program is designed to reduce health hazards among local women and children through the promotion of the use of clean energy cooking stoves among 800 households in Kibuku District, Eastern Uganda. the project will construct 3 clean energy cooking stoves to each target household.
There is rampant use traditional charcoal and firewood cooking stoves in Uganda due to the limited access clean energy among grass root communities. In Eastern Uganda particularly in Kibuku District, 98% of the grass root communities use firewood, charcoal for cooking and candles locally called "Tadoba" for lighting which exposes health hazards to women and children. The above situation is due to lack of access to clean energy cooking stoves, access to electricity and bio gas.
The project will mobilize and sensitize local women on the benefits of clean energy cooking stoves, mobilize and sensitize local leaders on the benefits of utilizing clean energy and engage them to promote utilization of clean energy cooking stoves , power and bio gas, train 80 youth in making clean energy cooking stoves, secure materials and construct clean cooking stoves to local households, moiroting and evalaition of the program
The project will contribute to reduced indoor air pollution and smoke, reducing impacts not only on climate change, but also preventing serious health complications and premature deaths within families. In addition to these environmental and health benefits, fuel efficient cooking stoves help prevent further destruction of nearby forests. it will also reduce over expenditure on buying charcoal and firewood.
