Report 8 - Support For Kids Touched By Cancer

By Justina Melinauskaite | Project Manager

This spring through March, April and May our charity foundation “Mothers' Union” provided financial support of 67 333 euros (75 528 USD) to Lithuanian children and the families who are undergoing cancer treatment. Donated money were used for purchasing medicine which is not compensated, necessary medical supplies and also for celebration of children birthdays as well as making their dreams come true. This financial support was also given to boys: Laurynas, Domas and Maximilian who is receiving treatment in Switzerland's cancer clinics. We would like to thank GlobalGiving donors who also contributed by donating 225 USD.

In three months Maximilian flew to Switzerland 3 times, Laurynas 2 times and Domas 3 times. For their travelling and medical treatment expenses we donated 7346,31 euros (8241.2 USD). Domas‘ mother says: „We are grateful to professor from Switzerland who is also helping us not to give up and is always repeating that road to recovery is long. He won’t let tumors to grow by killing them with cryopathy and laser. Thank you to those who helped and are still helping our sweet Dom to fight with this disease. Lots of smiles from little Dom”.

Also our charity foundation covered dendritic cell-based immunotherapys expenses of 3000 euros for Henric. For Justas and Thomas we bought not compensated antifungal medicine and medicine for mouth sores, everything cost 1638,28 euros (1838.48 USD).

“After bone marrow transplant we constantly need to keep up with changing bedding because of the side effect which is diarrhoea”, it is so hard to look into the little mouths because of the mouth sores”, “we really need wet napkins”. It is the one of the many requests which moms of those children ask for. Provide those things for daily nursing and hygiene is quite hard because of the financial situation and because of not having time to go out of the hospital. In those three month we provided necessary products such as diapers, wet napkins, bed underpads. Diapers – 48 units , wet napkins –31 units, bed underpads – 39 units. Other personal hygiene products (creams, shower gel, shampoo): creams – 8 units, Shower gel –11 units , Petroleum jelly – 8 units. All of this cost approximately 971 euros ( 2210.89 USD).

Every week together with our sponsors we spoil our patients with all kinds of tasty treats. Children had already tasted pastries, cepelins, the tastiest neopolitan pizzas and sweet juices. One of the funnest traditions of our foundation is when we congratulate our little patients on their birthdays. During this spring we with our sponsors we prepared and gave presents to 46 sick children. Also we‘ re still organising Saying goodbye to your hair celebrations with lots of balloons, pizzas and games. During spring months we origanized Saying goodbye to your hair celebrations for 15 children. We are happy that we can give children many colourful days before they part with their hair.

“I don’t know what we would do if there were no kind people”- those are words that mothers who need help say.

Thank god that there are kind people like you who donate for children who have cancer. Thanks to you children can finally get so needed help.
