In the heart of Chreav Village, near the ancient city of Angkor, a young boy named Tola is keeping Cambodia’s cultural soul alive—one musical note at a time. At just 18 years old, Tola is not only a Grade 12 student but also a dedicated musician of the Pinpeat ensemble, a form of Khmer traditional music once performed in royal courts and sacred ceremonies.
While most teenagers spend their free time on modern hobbies, Tola has chosen a different path—one deeply rooted in heritage and hope. For nearly three years, Tola has been learning Khmer traditional music with Salvation Centre Cambodia (SCC), a community-based organization working to preserve Cambodia’s cultural identity while supporting vulnerable youth.
Despite his demanding school schedule and family responsibilities, Tola never misses a chance to practice, learn, and grow. Tola is the eldest of four siblings, raised in a humble household where his parents work tirelessly to support the family. Fully aware of their struggles, Tola decided to use his musical talent to ease their burden. Today, he performs at cultural events, earning between $5 to $20 per show—money he uses to support both his education and his family. But Tola doesn’t stop at personal achievement. With quiet confidence and strong leadership, he mentors his peers during practice sessions, especially when instructors are absent. He teaches not only musical techniques but also values like discipline, commitment, respect, and humility—planting seeds of wisdom that will grow far beyond music.
Tola’s dream is to pursue Khmer traditional music as a second career and become a voice for cultural preservation in Cambodia. His journey is living proof that talent, determination, and a little support can light the way toward a brighter future.
With your help, we can continue to support Tola and other young artists like him. Your donation to SCC's Khmer Traditional Music Project will provide training, instruments, school support, and performance opportunities for youth who are eager to learn and lead.
Donate today and be part of a movement to empower youth and protect Cambodia’s cultural heritage. Together, we can ensure that the ancient sounds of Pinpeat continue to echo through future generations.
Thank you for your generosity and belief in the power of music.
