Every new school year represents for teachers and students a new range of novelties, uncertainties, challenges, purposes, relationships, conditions and expectations.

This year the scholarship project started with great enthusiasm with the girls, we are convinced that despite the circumstances we will continue our journey in pursuit of the best for the girls, the family and the community.

Thanks to your support, this year 15 girls continue studying in the basic cycle. They have new goals, new dreams, that day by day they will strive to achieve what they set out to do: be disciplined and enthusiastic students, to be good daughters, and to be responsible people in everything they do by continuing their studies, and therefore become successful professionals.

If we could describe in one word what 2020 has meant for the Scholarships Program, it would be Solidarity, a simple word, but one that transforms thoughts and feelings. Because it made our young scholarship recipients not feel alone in the midst of this health crisis.

Many people need a little support to dare more, to fight for their dreams and to reach their goals. This is the case of the scholarship students, who managed to complete their high school.

Thanks to you, we were able to make the year 2020 a reality of service and solidarity, and we are sure that what has been built in the life of each of the young women is a clear example of improving the quality of life. They have the capacity to see and feel the needs of others, and their generosity in giving a relevant response, they also manifest their solidarity in the daily life.

Having demonstrated ingenuity, creativity, teamwork, and commitment in implementing service actions with their family, their classmates, and their community, the young women are convinced that all these actions are part of their “life project”, that acting well and responsibly will open the doors for them to continue their professional and personal formation.

With your support, we will continue our struggle to be better people every day, and to promote opportunities for personal and professional growth in each of the young women with scholarships, and to contribute so that the families have their own growth in communication, honesty and love.

This would have not been possible without the economic support of more than 150 people, whose kindness and altruism will always be appreciated by the girls. Thank you so much for believing in this transformative project.

“I pledge to believe in myself and fight for what I want”

Rosa is a 16 year old girl who lives in Cantón Ayutia, in the department of Retalhuleu. She is studying 9th grade of High School.

Rosa is a cheerful, friendly young woman with moral values, which have been instilled by her parents. Don Narciso and Doña Hilda, through different jobs at home and in the community, they have always supported her. They are clear that education is basic for their daughters to have a good future.

Rosa comments that, “with the support of my parents, I have been able to achieve the goal of finishing the basic cycle, and I know that I will have their support to be able to fulfill one of my dreams: to graduate and be a successful professional, to be able to get a job and contribute to the economy of my home.

Rosa’s biggest dream is to study at the university to become a lawyer and notary, to work on her own, and thus be able to help her family which is the most important thing for her. Rosa recognizes the efforts that her parents make, and she shares a thought: “I commit myself to believe in me and fight for what I want”.

In the Scholarships program we have the commitment to accompany the young girls in their academic process and their extracurricular formation (reading habits, values, reinforcement of hygiene habits). For us as a project we know that the dreams and illusions of the scholarship students are the fundamental piece to achieve that they continue studying. And we are convinced that, step by step, it is possible to leave deep and strong roots in the young girls, in order to have a more just world full of many opportunities for them.

We have many reasons why to be grateful. But, above all, we are grateful for the support to our project and also for believing in the potential of young girls and making their dreams come true.

Marceli is a 16 year old girl from a small town in Retalhuleu, where the main sources of employment are agriculture and informal businesses.

She is currently studying 9th grade and is the oldest of 4 siblings. As she is the oldest of the children, she is in charge the family business (selling fruit) when her parents are not at home, as this is their main source of income.

Melissa joined the scholarship program in 2015, at the age of 10 and studying 4th grade. She was a very active child, she liked to collaborate with her classmates in group tasks, but public speaking was something she found difficult; therefore, she set out to overcome the fear of public speaking, and her words were: “Success is the sum of small efforts made day by day”.

In sixth grade Melissa presented her life project in front of several parents and fellow students, and she set out to give a quality presentation and... she succeeded! That was the moment she needed to overcome her fear.

Currently, she is a few months away from finishing her elementary studies, and has the goal of studying for a high school diploma at the Community Institute.

For this new goal, her family is her engine, because she knows that they are the ones who encourage her to achieve her dreams and succeed in life.

The young woman has a dream to study nursing. However, her desire is to study high school, so she can find a job and help her family with the income she generates. And, above all, to be able to help her 3 younger siblings have access to education and get to where she has been.
