The goal of the Scholarships for Girls program is to promote the entry and permanence of girls and teenage girls in the formal educational system, which increases their chances of growth, promoting the change of life they need. In the last five years, FUNDAP has helped more than 5.000 children, but with the lack of economic resources we have also reduced the contribution to basic education level, something that we intend to solve with donations from GlobalGiving.
The situation of disadvantage for girls in Guatemala is shown by the percentages of school dropout, since most do not finish primary school. Poverty, need to help their families, illness or lack of family support, are some causes that force school dropout without finishing the necessary levels. Donations to this fund will go to 50 girls between the ages of 13 and 16 so they can complete high school, all of them living in the department of Retalhuleu, a Southern Guatemalan area in poverty.
To achieve our goal to support 50 students, we need to fulfill the total economic goal we pursue with GlobalGiving. All girls will be carefully selected through a process that identifies highly vulnerable communities, schools and families and tend to them for the three years that high school lasts. At these ages the highest incidence of school dropout occur, we expect that the scholarship girls will have the opportunity to obtain the basic education level, concluding with the 3 of high school.
In FUNDAP with 35 years of experience, we know that donations help improve social problems, since the labor force in Guatemala is currently three years less educated than would be the case for the world's universal models of development. In the future, higher integration of women into the work force will also offer them opportunities thanks to their training. Through support for selected girls and awareness-raising work for parents/guardians, these girls will be able to design their own future.
