We know that education is key to advancing gender equality and ensuring a brighter future for girls in southern Senegal. Unfortunately, when girls are married off before their 18th birthday, it is highly unlikely they will finish school.
Grandmother Leaders work together with teachers and parents to ensure girls attend school and that their education is supported by their parents. They also work with parents and the wider community to change beliefs and practices related to child marriage, so that all girls can complete their secondary education.
280 trained Grandmother Leaders have already stopped numerous child marriages all over Velingara. It is important that more grandmothers throughout the community are trained to ensure that more girls will not be married off and instead, can continue their schooling.
