According to a recent World Vision report, “Global projections of girls married by 2030 have shot up from 100 million to 110 million, based on the current estimates that an additional 10 million girls will now be married due to the COVID 19 outbreak.”
Grandmother Leaders are an effective and sustainable way to stop child marriage – even during COVID. Grandmother Leaders trained by GMP work directly with communities and families to educate them about the physical, psychological and economic effects of child marriage.
In recent months communities in the Vélingara area in southern Senegal have reported a few cases of families who were considering marrying off their young daughters. With the help of the grandmothers, however, these families were convinced not to marry their girls off and allow them to stay in school.
GMP Grandmother Leadership training educates grandmothers about adolescent development, effective communication strategies and the qualities of a good leader. Armed with new information and skills, Grandmother Leaders work together with their communities in the fight to stop child marriage. Your help ensures that their fight continues!
