Grandmother Leaders trained by Grandmother Project have the power to change the course of a girl’s life. Every year countless girls are destined to leave school and marry before they even turn 18 – and many much younger. In fact, in Kolda, the region where our activities are located, the median age of girls' first marriage is 16.5 years. But trained Grandmother Leaders can change this reality and ensure that girls can still follow their dreams.
Grandmother Leaders don’t only convince fathers and communities of the dangers of child marriage. They also educate and support girls about the dangers of teen pregnancy. Every year in Kolda 9% of girls in school get pregnant before the age of 18 and are then destined to leave school and abandon their dreams for a different life.
COVID has not stopped the work of the Grandmother Leaders. Trained Grandmother Leaders have blocked the marriage of girls so they can continue to stay in school. Grandmothers have the power to educate the entire community and ensure that positive change in the lives of girls takes root.
Thank you to all who donated recently. Like the Grandmother Leaders, our commitment to changing the lives of girls in southern Senegal continues.
