2014 Was a Great Year!

Dear Friends,

2014 was such an exciting year for the schools attended by our scholarship students. In May, one of the schools began a program that is very similar to the Model UN here in the US. Students were assigned various local and national leaders, and then had to spend the day behaving and problem solving just as those leaders would. From this exercise, leadership classes for boys and girls were developed, allowing older students to further develop their skills and prepare to be Afghanistan’s next generation of leaders.

In October, students from one of the private schools entered an academic competition sponsored by the Afghan Ministry of Education. In the end, a girl from one of the Professor Sakena Yacoobi private schools won the competition, and an award was given congratulating the whole school for the high quality of education that led to such an achievement.

In December, students held an exhibition, similar to an American science fair, to show all that they had learned in their math and science classes during the year. Students (including GlobalGiving scholarship recipients) hosted thousands of people from the community, and everyone agreed that the event was a huge success.

Also in December, the Minister of Education in Herat province honored one of the private schools with a certificate of appreciation, noting the high quality of education being provided to students.

Together, we have been able to give deserving Afghan students the opportunity to attend these outstanding high schools and receive a high quality education. School begins again in April, and we are looking forward to awarding many new scholarships to students!
