This is an update related to the eruption of Taal Volcano which is near one of our residential care facilities in the Philippines. As of the time of this writing, all of the residential and community beneficiaries of Children’s Joy Foundation Laguna Center has been move to the residential care facility in the National Capital Region.
January 13, 2020, when the volcano started spewing out ashes, rocks, and finally lava, the shelter which houses the poor and disadvantaged children is completely covered with ashes. Around 6 to 8 inches thick of ashes concealed the front and backyard, while the once-clear swimming pool darkened. The vegetable garden maintained by the kids have been destroyed by the highly acidic ashes and rocks.
At around evening, the whole town of Canlubang ran out of water and the staff and houseparents had to find ways to drinkable water for everyone, especially the kids. On the same night, the electricity was also cut off (electricity in the town is generated through hydro-electricity from Maria Cristina falls).
The following morning, January 14, the Center Head and rest of the staff made a decision to move the kids to the shelter in the National Capital Region, which is further from the volcano and declared safe by the government.
CJFI didn’t stop at just protecting our own. Our social workers, in partnership with various agencies, surveyed the evacuation centers within the 17km-danger-zone radius and looked for one that isn’t reached by aid. As soon as we have identified an evacuation center, around midday of January 14, we have opened our doors for donations and the quick response team is working out the relief operations.
