Support the Families of Journalists in Danger

By Leigh Burke | Director, Development and Partnerships

As 2017 draws to a close, we remain hopeful that Austin Tice will be returning home soon to his beloved family and to his life in the US. The banner with Austin’s photo still hangs outside the Newseum in Washington, DC, reminding everyone who passes that an American journalist is still missing in Syria.

The news in the last year was not good for journalists. Every day, as the profession of journalism is denigrated, the lives of foreign correspondents are put in danger – as if the work they do, or the journalists themselves, can be stopped. We remain concerned about the journalists and news providers who are willing to travel to locations where their lives may be in jeopardy just for doing their job.

Reporters Without Borders maintains the Fund for Families to assist the families, colleagues and loved ones of American journalists who are missing, kidnapped, detained, jailed or even murdered. There are often leads to follow, and we cannot allow a lack of financial support to be the reason a journalist doesn't return home from their assignment.

We thank you for your support as we prepare for 2018 and hope that the next year brings better news for our brave colleagues.
