Support the Families of Journalists in Danger

By Hilary Koss | Development Manager RSF USA

Thank you so much for your incredibly generous gift to the Fund for Families of Journalists in Danger. It is because of donors like you that we are able to provide critical support to journalists and their families in the most difficult moments of their lives, and I could not be more grateful.

Even as another new year has come and gone, all of us at Reporters Without Borders share your hope that Austin Tice, an American journalist who has been missing in Syria for over five years, will come home to his family soon. The opportunity for more journalists like Austin to vanish continues to grow as negative and sometimes even aggressive attitudes toward journalists inch closer and closer to being mainstream every day.

With these outright attacks on the media, those in power are giving credence to those at home and abroad who would seek to discredit or silence journalists—and we advocate on their behalf to get them the protection they need to perform one of the most critical facets of a democracy.

Our advocacy efforts to protect journalists are ongoing, but we cannot deny the immediate needs of those in danger now. There are often leads to follow, and we will not allow a lack of financial support to be the reason a journalist doesn't return home from their assignment. This is why Reporters Without Borders USA continues to provide the Fund for Families to assist the families, colleagues, and loved ones of American journalists who are missing, kidnapped, detained, jailed, or even murdered.

Thank you again for your thoughtful gift to the Fund for Families. With your continued support, I know we can protect journalists, their families, and the right to information for us all.

All my best,
Hilary
