Help Families Losing SNAP: Build DMV Food Pantry

By Salah Kamal | Founder & CEO

Dear GlobalGiving Community,

As we enter a new season, we want to share an important and transparent update about our effort to establish a community food pantry for families across the DMV.

Our commitment to this project remains strong. Unfortunately, our greatest challenge continues to be a critical lack of funding.

Our campaign was created with a goal of $100,000 to help establish and operate a reliable food pantry for families experiencing food insecurity. With only a very small portion of that goal raised so far, we have not been able to move forward at the scale we had hoped.

This is particularly concerning as winter approaches.

For families already struggling to afford groceries, the colder months can bring additional financial pressure. Household resources must stretch across food, rent, utilities, transportation, medical expenses, and other essential needs. For a family already living on a limited budget, an unexpected expense can mean having to make painful choices about which necessities come first.

Our goal is to help ensure that food does not have to be one of those choices.

The Challenge We Are Facing

American Aid has continued planning for a pantry model that can provide families with dignified access to nutritious food, fresh produce, and emergency food assistance.

However, preparation alone cannot stock shelves.

It cannot purchase food.

It cannot provide refrigerators, shelving, storage, equipment, or other resources needed for pantry operations.

And it cannot meet the growing needs of families without donor support.

The funding gap remains the single greatest obstacle to moving this project forward.

We have worked to strengthen our planning, identify potential partners and food sources, prepare systems for tracking distributions and impact, and develop a model that can grow as resources become available.

We are ready to do the work.

What we need now is the funding to put those plans into action.

Why Winter Makes This More Urgent

As temperatures fall, many families face difficult household decisions.

A parent should not have to choose between buying groceries and keeping the heat on.

A senior should not have to choose between food and medication.

Children should not have to experience hunger because their family's limited income cannot cover every essential expense.

This is why establishing a dependable community food resource is so important.

Our vision remains to provide families experiencing hardship with access to food in an environment centered on dignity, compassion, and respect.

With sufficient funding, the project is intended to support nutritious food distributions, fresh produce, emergency food assistance, and connections to additional stabilizing resources.

We Need the Community Now

This project cannot succeed through planning alone.

It will succeed when people decide that families in their own community should not have to face hunger alone.

Every contribution can help move this project closer to operation.

A small donation may seem insignificant compared with a $100,000 goal, but collective giving is powerful. When many donors contribute what they can, small gifts become stocked shelves, food boxes, fresh produce, and support for families going through difficult times.

And if you are unable to make a donation today, sharing this campaign can also make a difference. One share may introduce this project to the individual, family, business, foundation, or community partner willing to help us take the next step.

Our Next Steps

As funding becomes available, American Aid plans to move forward in phases, prioritizing the resources necessary to begin serving families and expanding operations as support grows.

We will continue strengthening partnerships, identifying food and supply resources, mobilizing volunteers, and maintaining systems that allow us to document and report the impact of donor support.

Most importantly, we will continue working toward the same goal that inspired this project:

Creating a dependable place where families experiencing food insecurity can receive help with dignity.

Help Us Before Winter Deepens the Need

We began this campaign because we saw a need in our community.

That need has not disappeared.

As winter approaches, the importance of having reliable food assistance becomes even greater for households already struggling to meet basic expenses.

Today, we are asking the GlobalGiving community to help us move this project from preparation to action.

Please donate today and help us build the food pantry our community needs.

If you have already supported the project, thank you. Your generosity means a great deal to us.

If you cannot donate, please share the campaign with your family, friends, colleagues, local businesses, and community networks.

Together, we can help make sure that families facing difficult circumstances know that their community has not forgotten them.

With gratitude,

Salah Kamal
