Our Choir's Christmas Performance

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

When our Deaf students stand together in choir, hands moving in rhythm, faces alive with expression, something powerful is happening that goes far beyond performance.

Through choir and the arts, students strengthen the very skills that prepare them for success in technology and computer learning. They learn to track visual cues, follow sequences, recognize patterns, and work as a team, all essential abilities in digital environments. Performing in Mexican Sign Language deepens their language fluency, which directly supports reading comprehension, on-screen instructions, and clear digital communication.

Just as importantly, the arts build confidence. In choir, students practice, adjust, and try again until they succeed. That resilience is the same mindset needed when learning new software, troubleshooting problems, or exploring coding for the first time. A student who feels capable on stage begins to believe they are capable at a computer. Support of arts programming at EEESMA is not an “extra.” It is foundational. It strengthens cognition, builds identity, and nurtures the courage to take on new challenges. When you invest in music and creative expression, you are also investing in digital literacy, vocational opportunity, and lifelong independence.

The applause they receive today echoes into the careers they will build tomorrow.

Thanks to each of you for your support in the past and into the future.
