Project Report | Jul 14, 2025
Karate Achievements

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

Karate: Building Confidence, Discipline and Strength at EEESMA

Although this report doesn't exactly reference "Coding", we believe that the Karate Program at EEESMA School for the Deaf has many fundamental overlaps with the Coding Program. Because the programs compliment each other so well, and include students from both groups, we include the report here today.

We believe in nurturing the whole student — mind, body, and spirit. One of the many ways our students grow in confidence and character is through their dedicated participation in Karate. This discipline continues to be a source of pride and achievement for many of our young learners.

Currently, fourteen students are enrolled in Karate classes, and the program continues to grow. Several newcomers have recently joined, beginning their journey at the white belt level, while others are making exciting progress through yellow and orange belts. Notably, Abril, aged 14, has reached the blue belt level, an impressive achievement, and is now preparing to test for the next stage. Way to go, Abril!

Recently students Saul, Angel, and Montserrat successfully passed their belt exams, earning their yellow and orange Kyu belts. These milestones are a testament to their focus, determination, and the guidance of their dedicated instructor, Maestro Enrique, whose passion and encouragement inspire the students to strive for excellence.

The Benefits of Karate for Young People

Karate offers far more than physical fitness — it teaches valuable life skills that extend beyond the mat. For young people, especially those who are Deaf or hard of hearing, karate provides:

  • Improved Focus and Discipline
  • Confidence and Self-Esteem
  • Physical Health
  • Social Connection and Inclusion
  • Self-Advocacy and Empowerment

Your support is needed to continue the Karate program at school. Please make a donation on GlobalGiving’s July Bonus Day, July 16th, the day your gift will be generously matched.

We are incredibly proud of the dedication and passion our students bring to Karate, and of the role this discipline plays in their success at school. Congratulations to all our Karate students, and to Maestro Enrique, for your remarkable accomplishments and continued growth!

Thank you for your continued support!
