Help Deaf Kids in Mexico Learn Computer Skills

Computer technology classes often captivate young students attention, serving as an invaluable tool for all, but particularly benefit kids who are Deaf. Computers provide deaf young people with equitable communication through written language, leveling the playing field so to speak.

In the latest training session, our middle school students' engagement reached exceptional levels. Natalia, in-school computer specialist, delivered instructions in Spanish, while teachers Olga, Tony and Fernanda, acting as assistants, expertly interpreted them to Mexican Sign Language. Natalia then demonstrated the activity, encouraging the students to work independently until completion of the project. Interpretation of the instuctions plays a pivotal role in guiding deaf students through each step.

The session comprised of three fun and engaging activities. Firstly students, using a straightforward Scratch progamming language, directed a cat's movements using designated computer keys. Each student successfully executed the task, grasping the concepts effortlessly.

Next, students delved into crafting their own spaceship video game again using  Scratch, sparking excitement as they selected images and codes, fostering creativity and individual expression.

The session concluded with a hands-on circuit making activity. The students assembled an electronic bee using everyday materials such as wooden clothes pins, a large watch battery, LED bulbs, electrical tape and pipe cleaners of various colors. Upon completion the LED lights illuminated their creations. How exciting!

The enthusiasm displayed by all participants underscored the anticipation for future classes, highlighting the effectiveness and impact of how developing  computer technology skills benifits deaf students. These classes encourage each student to individually create an electronic gadget, not only from the skills they've learned in class but also from using their own imagination.
