Care for Wild’s conservation vision rests firmly on the understanding that protected landscapes can only thrive alongside empowered, supported local communities. Through educational outreach, youth engagement, and sports development across seven neighboring communities, our programs work to build opportunity, trust, and shared pride. None of this vital work would be possible without the generous support of our donors, whose commitment directly fuels these life-changing initiatives on the ground.
At the heart of our youth initiatives is the Educational Outreach Program, delivered in partnership with the Good Work Foundation’s Open Learning Academy. Following intensive capacity training earlier in the year, Care for Wild’s facilitators established a weekly presence across four local primary schools, Sheba, Fairview, Sinqobile, and Louieville Combined, reaching over 600 children each week.
The curriculum delivers foundational English and Mathematics support using digital tablets, interactive play, and creative learning days designed to make education engaging and accessible. The program has also adapted directly to specific school needs, such as expanding support to assist 57 Grade 7 learners at Sheba Primary with dedicated exam preparation.
Beyond the traditional classroom, the School Holiday Program welcomed 65 children from neighboring communities directly to the sanctuary. These holiday sessions offer hands-on environmental education where young learners can experience conservation in action, explore nature, and build technological confidence through guided tablet sessions. Balanced with outdoor team games, personal development activities, and nutritious meals, the sanctuary provides a safe, inspiring space for young people to connect with the environment they share.
Sports have long served as a vital bridge for community engagement, evolving from the creation of the Rhinos United team in 2019 into a thriving local sports ecosystem. The SAFA-registered Rhino Cup Soccer Tournament has grown into one of Care for Wild’s largest community platforms, engaging over eight local clubs across surrounding villages. Match days draw dozens of players and hundreds of spectators, fostering community ownership while creating economic opportunities for local vendors.
The platform has also expanded into female athletics; following requests from local women, dedicated netball and ladies’ soccer were introduced, bringing 41 female athletes from local schools onto the field while giving Grade 7 learners practical experience in operating market stalls for spectators.
Through education, holiday enrichment, and community sport, Care for Wild continues to cultivate deep-rooted partnerships that safeguard both people and wildlife for generations to come, a lasting impact made possible by the incredible dedication of our donor community. Thank you for your loyal support.
