Adi Etot, Ethiopia

Located high on a plateau in the middle of northern Ethiopia, Adi Etot is home to about 400 people. And we’ve met every single one of them.

In Adi Etot, life used to revolve around collecting dirty water that was stealing time and resources, often making entire families sick. But in 2016, supporters like you stepped up to change things. They sent a drilling rig to Adi Etot and now, three years later, life in this community is completely different.

School attendance has more than doubled. Moms talk about their children and beam with joy, knowing that they’ll never have to drink dirty water. Families are healthier and happier.

Life in Adi Etot isn’t perfect. Daily struggles still exist. But now, at the very least, more than 400 people living in a tiny mountain town in Ethiopia have access to clean and safe water. The world is a little bit better, thanks to clean water and supporters like you.

TADESE'S STORY

Tadese is a farmer in Adi Etot. Despite the fact that he’s 75 years old, he wakes up every morning, eats a breakfast of spicy honey butter and milk, and makes his way to the farm.

He spends most of his days ploughing, weeding, and threshing so he can help care for his wife, four sons, and two daughters.

As much work as it is to be a farmer, the biggest hardship for Tadese's family was the burden of collecting water.

They’d walk to far-off water sources two times every day, and the water they brought home was harmful to their health. Back then, Tadese told us, "Clean water would protect us from diseases and parasites. Water means life."

But today, everything is different. Tadese had us in tears as he talked about the change he’s seen in his community since receiving clean water three years ago.

“We have transitioned from the darkest life to the brightest life,” he told us. “We have won the lottery.”
