A huge thank you to everyone who has donated. Without you it would not have been possible for the Kanyanga Mothers' Waiting Shelter to be completed.
The progress of the shelter has been impressive and we are very grateful to the community for their support.
This shelter will provide a safe and secure space for expectant mothers to be able to rest in their final month of pregnancy to be close to the Rural Health Post. Being close to the facility means women who are giving birth will able to be attended to by health care staff who can recognise any complications and attend to the mothers in an event of an emergency. It also means that women will be able to have a safe and sanitary birth. We hope that having more expectant mothers close to the facility for births will reduce the amount of maternal and neo natal deaths in the area. Kanyanga has a catchment of 24,500 people, which covers 15 outreach posts, the furthest away being 45km from Kanyanga. Often women will attempt to walk to the facility too late on in their pregancy and end up giving birth on the way with no medical support. Previously the old Mothers Waiting Shelter had no facilities and women had to sleep on sacks on the floor. The new facility will offer the expectant mothers a dignified place to rest before giving birth.
We are expecting the facility to be officially opened in the next month.
