Over the last two months we have been working with the health facility staff, community members, district health office, district director of works, and water and affairs department to co-design a mothers' shelter that meets the needs of Kanyanga community.
Based on the consultation we have decided to construct a 20 bed mothers' shelter, rather than the Ministry of Health standard 10 bed structure. This takes into account the size of the catchment area (24,500 people) served by the facility, and the anticipated increase in demand for maternal services that will come from improved infrastructure, and functioning of the facility. This project is being delivered alongisde interventions such as improved water and sanitation, opening of a maternity annex, training of health workers, installation of solar power, and projects to improve accessibility.
Now that designs have been finalised, we are mobilising community members to supply upfront materials that will be used in construction and working with our multi-sector team to finalise our procurement process to identify contractors. Once finalised we will put out a call for tender with the aim of finalising a contractor and construction plan by the end of March, and beginning construction at the end of rainy season in April.
We now have funds in place to enable us to complete construction, and we are looking to secure funding to equip the shelter with beds, mattresses, bedding and a kitchen for expectant mothers.
