Svitlana is 42. She is a mother of 4 girls - two young kids and two teens. Early this year Svitlana was diagnosed with sarcoma - a type of aggressive cancer that attacks bone and connective tissues - and began treatment in Mykolaiv, a city in southern Ukraine. By that time, Mykolaiv and its residents have been bombed by Russians multiple times. Half of the city's population had fled the war. The hospital itself has been hit by a missile. But Svitlana had nowhere to go and no means to travel. She could not interrupt her treatment and struggled to afford necessary medications for chemotherapy.
One of Svitlana's friends was our volunteer who provided medical translations to patients. She referred Svitlana to us for help with buying medications. Svitlana has never asked anyone for help before, but she reached a point when she could no longer afford treatment, and she knew she had to continue her fight - not just for her, but also for her children.
We were able to support Svitlana and we greatly appreciate your care and kindness that enabled us to do so. Svitlana is continuing chemotherapy and dealing with the side effects that come with it. But recently she wrote to send her thanks and let us know how much the support meant for her.
We are very grateful to you on her behalf and hope you will continue giving your support to patients like Svitlana. Your help allows us to reach even patients who are receiving treatment during the war. It's invaluable - because it is not only money, but also a ray of hope. A hope for the future without cancer and without war. Thank you!
