Despite the post-election violence that disrupted Kenya in late 2007, the participants of Young Women in Enterprise (YWE) are rebuilding. Much of YWE’s efforts in 2008 focused on a recovery and rehabilitation program to help the young women rebuild their businesses and homes and reestablish their enterprise clubs.
TechnoServe continued to focus on training and educational opportunities for the young women. New YWE members receive training in entrepreneurship skills and preparation of business plans. The trainings are paying off – YWE has assisted 103 girls in six enterprise clubs from the poor slums of Nairobi. From March to September, we engaged with 17 new businesses, recovered 11 of the fallen businesses and continued working with 18 existing businesses. These 46 businesses generated $19,500 in sales and $5,983 in profits.
With support from the Nike Foundation, several YWE members recently participated in a leadership training, helping to boost their confidence and train them to be positive influences on other girls in their clubs. They are also training to become spokespeople for HIV/AIDS awareness under the new HIV Free Generation program in Kenya.
Entering the next phase of the program, we will focus on recruiting new members and graduating existing enterprise clubs. Thank you for your continued support. Every donation helps to empower these young women to create new opportunities in their lives – breaking the hopeless cycle of poverty.
