This is a story of a mother's love and dedication to her son. Of politicians actually doing what they should. And of a miracle that followed... Sounds like a good story, right?
The premier of our province visited Ficksburg the other day. In some crazy way Blessing's mother had a chance to talk with him about her son, and also told him that there is no chance of Blessing getting his implant funded by the Department of Health, and that we are busy raising funds for the implant ourselves. Mr Magashule promised that he would donate about $1000 from his own pocket. A week later, his office phoned Blessing's mother, and informed her that he will not be paying the money, but that everything has been taken care of. I had a phonecall from the surgeon doing the implants at Universitas Hospital this week saying that he has a signed letter from the CEO of the hospital saying that Blessing must get his implant - funded by the Department of Health! His operation is scheduled for the 25th of November 2014 - YAY!
However, the funds raised by this project will still go to Blessing's implant costs - his family need to buy spare parts for the implant so that if something needs to be repaired, they will be able to replace the part that broke with a spare, so that he is not without sound for any period of time. We are so relieved about this news, and wish Blessing and his family all the best in his journey to sound!
Our next project is raising funds to cover the running costs of our Rural Infant Hearing Screening Project - the place where we first came into contact with Blessing and his family. It is estimated that there are about 432 chidlren with hearing loss living in our local municipality, of which only about 10 are diagnosed and known to us.
