In our previous report, we mentioned that Peter had been moved into the boma next to the others, and that the eventual plan was to integrate him too. We are pleased to report that this has happened, and all the rhinos are now together in the same boma.
Little Peter took to Esmé immediately, and followed her around, just as if she was his real mom. Esmé too has accepted the newest arrival and has been an excellent surrogate mother-come-big-sister to all the little ones. The Hoedspruit Endangered Species Centre has also partnered with Africam, and cameras were set up in the rhino’s boma to record live footage of their activities. This has proven to be rather popular - not only all our Wildlife Conservation Trust and HESC social media followers, but the Africam followers too – with Peter being a particular favourite.
The best time to see the rhinos on camera is between the late afternoons and early mornings, South African time. If you haven’t yet tuned in to see the rhinos live, please visit https://hesc1.africam.com.
Bula starts his weaning process
While we are excited to learn that Bula has begun his weaning process, he is not too thrilled about it, because he now gets one less feed per day than Peter – but more milk per feed. This has proven to be a challenge when Peter receives that extra feed, because Bula tries his best to intercept and squeeze in a sneaky sip or two. In time he will learn to adjust – but this is all part of growing up.
