Access to digital reading has never been more important; incorporating digital learning into education is now the norm and brings Worldreader new opportunities to make a difference for more children around the world. As of January 1, 2022, Worldreader has reached 19 million readers in 76 countries across six global regions: East Africa, West Africa, Middle East & North Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and the United States.
As the COVID-19 pandemic continues to plague India, Worldreader is working with local schools to train teachers on digital learning tools and is providing students with access to our free BookSmart app with hundreds of culturally-relevant digital books. Below are some of our specific activities to Keep Children Reading across India. Home Reading: Daycares and Schools are under COVID Closure as per the government directive.
The project activities were rapidly transitioned to home reading by parents, with teachers supporting them with Reading Activities daily. Global Keep Children Reading Campaign: Aligned with the global campaign, Keep Children Reading, the team initiated the response to get the information out to parents by leveraging pre-existing communication apps that schools use to stay in touch with parents. Audio Tips and Whatsapp creatives: In line with the school closures and the need for parents to play the teacher role at home, audio tips and WhatsApp creatives were shared in the groups to motivate parents to read daily with children and to get better equipped to read to their children at home.
BookSmart 14 Day Reading Challenge: A 14 day Global Reading Challenge was completed involving all the project schools and preschool students. This reading challenge includes books for children aged 3-8. After completing all 14 books, all the participants will receive a link to download their Booksmart Reading Challenge certificate. Thanks to your contributions, we are half way to our goal.
