The activities, campaigns, and massive marches commemorating the 50th anniversary of the civic-military coup in Argentina and various parts of the world demonstrated the enduring importance of Memory.
At Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, together with other human rights organizations, we organized the march and the main event at Plaza de Mayo. Additionally, we carried out the campaign “Florecerán pañuelos" (which means "Handkerchiefs Will Bloom"). This was an initiative to highlight the ongoing struggle through the decoration of handkerchiefs with flowers. The campaign was creatively replicated in schools, institutions, clubs, and by hundreds of people who marched carrying their decorated handkerchiefs.
In March, we also organized several presentations at the Casa por la Identidad during the three days of the first Human Rights Book Fair held at the Memory Space, former ESMA. National and international authors presented their books to full audiences. Moreover, we coordinated a workshop there for the "Handkerchiefs Will Bloom" campaign so that everyone could bring their creations to the march.
In March, we resumed the film series and book presentations at the Casa por la Identidad. We presented "50. Historias de juicios por la dictadura argentina," a book by the group La Retaguardia, as well as the film “LS83”, together with its director and producer.
In addition, we published a special monthly for the 50 years of the coup.
During these months, hundreds of students from different schools participated in guided tours of the Casa por la Identidad. In this space, we also inaugurated the exhibition "The Inventiveness of Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo," an installation of historical objects realted to the origins of the struggle.
All these activities contributed to raising awareness about the search for grandchildren, a significant unresolved issue of Argentine democracy. As a result, inquiries to Abuelas increased dramatically: on March 23 and 24 alone, we received 350 inquiries from people with questions about their identity and 122 communications providing information about posible grandchildren.
