Project name: Help a Woman Feed Her Family

Overview

Over 14 million of South Africans go to bed hungry every night and about 2.8 million children experience hunger weekly.

The Help a Woman Feed Her Family project was started to empower women with agricultural skills that will alleviate hunger problems

In September 2021, Young Global Entrepreneurs was blessed by an opportunity to partner with GlobalGiving in a the accelerator fundraising campaign to raise funds towards the Help a woman Feed Her Family project. Funders generously donated and YGE is very grateful for that. YGE would like to sincerely thank you, the donor, for your generous support. The funds donated have been used to start vegetable gardens for two beneficiaries from Vereeniging, a suburb located 50Km South of Johannesburg.

  • Beneficiary 1: A widow raising two children, but also interested in helping other women in the area. She has some knowledge on growing vegetables.
  • Beneficiary 2: A woman running an orphanage and desperately needs support.

Activities accomplished

Training of beneficiaries

  • Training is an ongoing process and prototypes were set up to enable practical training that will ensure efficient management of the vegetable gardens by the beneficiaries.

 Setting up vegetable gardens

  • Acquiring material to build vegetable garden beds
  • Purchasing of seeds and planting of seedlings
  • Some seedlings have already been planted and will be ready to transplant into the beds in the next 3 weeks

 Monitoring and evaluation (M&E)

  • Due to the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions, visits and communication were restricted to once a fortnight. The M&E processes will improve due to the eased restriction.

 Challenges encountered

  • The main challenge was and still is the Covid 19 pandemic restrictions that made engagement with the beneficiaries a challenge.
  • Building relationships with government partners is slow due to Covid 19 pandemic restrictions.
  • These challenges will improve with the lifted Covid 19 restrictions.

 Conclusion

  • The project is in the inception stage. YGE's aim is to build vegetable gardens for at least 300 women by end of 2022.
  • YGE will greatly appreciate any donation from you the donor, to help support this worthy cause.
  • The current beneficieries are very grateful and excited about the opportunity.

Planned activities for Quarter 2

  • Meeting with government and community stakeholders to establish relationships to improve the project.
  • Building of the vegetable garden beds
  • Transplanting of the seedlings
  • Ongoing monitoring and evaluation
  • Inviting orphans to training and teaching them skills
