Involving the Students and their Communities

By Gayle Kliever | Project Leader

Students Meeting May 31st
Students Meeting May 31st

Although educational support for vulnerable Tanzanian students is the goal of this project, we want to be aware of the whole community around each of our children.  Therefore, we hold separate meetings for students and for the "family" members of our students. Even though the students belonging to this GlobalGiving project do not generally have any parents, we want to include guardians, family members, and friends who help care for our children. Both of these communities are important to our students.  And everyone seems to enjoy the good times and friendships that are generated by these meetings.

On May 31st, forty-four of our students gathered with the Trustees in Bukoba. The trustees planned this Students Meeting for them to get to know each other as a GLK family, to learn of their own responsibilities for the scholarship, and to discuss their educational challenges. Students participated in discussions, trustees shared advice, and three recent graduates offered points of guidance and encouragement. The students enjoyed the day and felt inspired to do their best. The meeting began with breakfast and ended with lunch (also enjoyed!). To see many photos and quotes, see our July e-newsletter (July Newsletter - GLK Student Fund).

During Gayle’s visit in August and September 2024, the caregivers (guardians, siblings, friends, and family members) met for a “Parents Meeting”. The trustees offered support and guidance reflecting their experience with our students. It was an important time of sharing which somehow broke out into a party. Parents began to give thanks for the assistance that we are able to give and this developed into a improvised song about the scholarships—and quite a bit of dancing. One plastic chair was put to use as a drum. It was quite a joyous occasion and so encouraging to all involved. We wish all of our donors and sponsors could have been there that morning to experience the happiness and gratitude in person.
