Summary

Building on our experience supporting women in Bangkok, we equip schoolgirls in Ubon Ratchathani, Northeastern Thailand, with practical knowledge not covered by a dedicated school subject: legal rights, how to recognize danger and exploitation, basic self-defense, how to report violence, and where to seek help. Girls can use these skills wherever they later live, study, or work. After recent workshops, 96% were better prepared to respond to violence or unsafe situations.

Challenge

Schoolgirls in Ubon Ratchathani, Northeastern Thailand, are not taught practical skills about legal rights, personal safety, recognizing danger, or seeking help. Many face unsafe situations without knowing how to report them or access trusted support. Before our recent workshops, 77% had experienced or witnessed violence or danger. Our work with women in Bangkok shows that these risks can continue into adulthood, making early preparation essential wherever girls later live, study, or work.

Solution

We run three-hour workshops in Ubon Ratchathani schools, teaching girls their legal rights, how to recognize danger, report violence, use basic self-defense, and seek help. These practical skills fill a gap in Thailand's standard school curriculum and help girls respond safely wherever they later live, study, or work. As one participant shared: "I learned how to protect myself in dangerous situations and how to deal with scams and nearby risks, so I can help myself when something happens."

Long-Term Impact

Better Me for Girls has reached more than 43,000 girls since 2011. Claim Your Rights equips schoolgirls with knowledge they can carry into adulthood: how to recognize danger, protect themselves, report violence, and seek help. In recent workshops, 97% increased their knowledge of their rights and where to seek help. Reaching girls early helps them make safer, more informed decisions, share practical knowledge with others, and strengthen safety within their families and communities over time.
