Help 500 Filipino Children be Literate in Computer

Project Report | Dec 5, 2019
Providing Computers for ICT Education of Poor Kids

By Rodney Z. | Project Leader

Interviewer’s question:

“Marunong ba kayong mag-computer? May computer lessons ba kayo?” (Do you know how to use a computer? Do you have computer lessons?)

Fifth-grade student’s response:

“Nag ka-klase po kami ng computer pero naka-drawing lang po yung parts like keyboard, wala pong computer talaga” (Yes we have but it’s all just illustrated and only on visual aids)

According to studies, about 70% of the Philippine public schools don’t even have a single computer unit. This is true in far-flung barangays in the countryside. Computer lessons are still being conducted but only using sketches of the keyboard, monitor, and other parts of the computer. This condition has resulted in an imbalance of education to our youth. While private schools have all the luxury in IT education to their students, it is the complete opposite in public schools in the barangays.

The turnover of sets of computer equipment to Tamayong Elementary School is part of the Computer Literacy Program partnership of Dell EMC and Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. In this grant, a partnership with public schools was a component of the grant as a contribution of Dell and CJFI in solving the lack of computer sets in public schools.

The teachers of Tamayong Elementary School lead by the school Master Teacher Mrs. Roselyn I. Caldoza welcomed the team in excitement. These computer sets will answer the need of the school to provide the students with the computer education they need.

Before the formal turnover of high-end computers, a short programme was done. The programme started with messages of gratitude both from Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. represented by the Director for Monitoring and Development and Tamayong Elementary School represented by the OIC school principal. The turnover culminated with a MOA signing between CJFI and Tamayong Elementary School.

In the speech of CJFI MED Director, Mr. Riene Tagupa, emphasized the importance of the IT education that must be given to the students so they would become more competitive most particularly in looking for jobs when they finished college courses. He also elaborated that such project was a fulfillment of the CJFI’s commitment to the school and to the students of Tamayong.

Mrs. Caldoza, the OIC principal, was very grateful to Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. for the project. The students highly needed the desktops to satisfy their needs in IT education.

Immediately after the formal turnover and upon the signing of the MOA between CJFI and Tamayong Elementary School, the students tested the units by doing their school seatworks and assignments. The students were amazed by the speed of the desktops. The sets were loaded with windows 10, nVidia GEforce graphics card, 8GB RAM, and 1TB HDD storage.

The activity ended at about 12:00 noon.
