NGOs in Davao Received their First ICT Education

By Rodney Z. | Correspondent

Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc. (CJFI) recently conducted an ICT education with 135 children and youth who grew up inside shelters. These children are not as exposed to computers, gadgets and electronic devices as normal kids who grew up with their parents. The shelters, where they are living, are not equipped as well to conduct ICT education or even to provide them with the basic computer education.

This activity was conducted on four shelters that are also fellow members in ABSNET or Area-Based Standards Network, an external arm of the Department of Social Welfare and Development

Child Hope Field of Dreams supports 30 children from 3 to 18 years of age (all male) who are homeless, dependent, neglected, abandoned and orphaned. When CJFI facilitators arrived, they were all excited and were looking forward to opening the laptops they were assigned. A total of 22 young boys were educated with the basic of Microsoft Office applications through our experienced CBSP Community-Based Support Program and ICT Staff.

Padre Pio’s Home for Children (PPHC) is an orphanage also located in Davao city. Managed by the Apostles of Jesus Crucified Sisters whose patron saint is St. Pio, they currently have around 40 children, 32 of which participated in the ICT education that was provided for free by CJFI. The group was divided into two batches of youngsters and was conducted in their open area. One of the kids, named Maya (not real name), was so amazed the whole time with the activity and mentioned to the CJFI instructor that this is her first time to use a laptop.

The Rehabilitation Center for Drug Dependents (RCDD) helps individuals who are already drug or alcohol dependent. An ICT class was also conducted to them which helped them focused on learning new and exciting things using Microsoft applications. RCDD has the most number of participants among the NGOs which were 40 teenage boys.

Lastly, an ICT education on basic computer use and Microsoft application were conducted at SMAC Sisters orphanage located in Tugbok, Davao City where 31 children participated and learned a lot from the program. According to the sisters in-charge, they are so thankful that CJFI gave the free computer lessons to help out their children in coping up with the technological advances.

A total of 135 children and youth from the four (4) orphanages and shelters participated in the first leg of computer lessons tackling the basic parts, usage of computer and basic of Microsoft applications.
