Computer literacy has become a basic requirement for employment here in the Philippines. While a high school or college diploma may secure a better opportunity, without the basic computer know-how, it is still somehow impossible to get those good-paying jobs. This is why the Computer Literacy Program has been extended not only to the disadvantaged children in the countryside, but also to out-of-school youth and young adults.
Mari, 19 years old, recently participated in the Computer Literacy training provided by the Children’s Joy Foundation, Inc in partnership with Dell Technologies. She didn’t complete high school primarily due to the financial instability of her parents to provide for her schooling. Since then, she helped her parents earn a living for the family.
Unexpectedly, she also became pregnant and is now raising two kids with her boyfriend who is also an out-of-school youth. Her boyfriend rows a boat for tourists in their area. This irregular job makes it hard for them to balance supporting the needs of the two kids, and also her siblings’ schooling.
In an interview, she told us that she wants to have a job that pays regularly. However, without being computer literate, it is impossible to pass even the basic computer literacy tests whenever she applies. That’s why she took the opportunity of the free training provided by the Children’s Joy Foundation in their municipality to learn how to use MS Office applications like Word and Excel.
After the training, Mari completed the course with flying colors attaining the third highest position in their batch. The knowledge and experience, together with the recognition and the certificate of participation provided to her will definitely give her a chance in being shortlisted in her future job applications.
The Computer Literacy training conducted in the Visayas benefitted more than 400 out-of-school youth, alternative learning system (ALS) learners and even high school students who have no computer subjects in their school.
