With the evolution of computer technology and its massive use in business, academe, socialization, entertainment and other fields, students like Hanna, 15, wishes for a sustainable computer literacy education in school.
The vice president of the Supreme Student Government (SSG) of the Jose T. Quiboloy Senior National High School, Hanna shared that they were able to use the computers in the laboratory in Grade 9 but all they learned was how to put the computer on and how to shut it down. The lack of electricity disables them to continuously learn how to use computers. Moreover, she said, “Sa pagkakaron nga dili man magamit ang among computers tungod walay kuryente, kung magpaproject ang among teacher, nagababa mi sa Calinan para mag-net. Since we cannot use the computers due to lack of electric power, I need to commute going to Calinan where there is an internet café. I would spend Php100 for the computer usage including the fare. If I go out at 1 o’clock in the afternoon, I would be home at 3 or 4 o’clock in the afternoon. It’s really a hassle since I still have house chores that I need to do.”
She further identified other factors that contribute to the problem. “Wala mi’y modules na ginagamit so ang among ginahimo kay nagadownload lang pud mi sa internet (We do not have modules of the computer lessons, so, what we do is download lessons from the internet.)”
“Sa among school, kulang pud mi ug teachers. Walo lang among teachers sa 400 ka estudyante (In our school, we do not have enough teachers. There are only eight teachers for 400 students.)”
(To all Children’s Joy Foundation and Global Giving partners, we hope that you can help us with our problem in the delivery of an effective computer literacy program in our school with the provision of modules and electrical power source so that we can fare well with students in other schools. May you give us the chance to experience and learn the use of computers such that when the time comes that we finish school, we can find better jobs.)”
