Our Challenges with COVID-19

We thank God that our families remain safe from the pandemic when 40 thousand Kenyans were infected, 32 thousand recovered and 750 dead.  Nenkashe Education Centre has been active visiting all our children in the program, encouraging them and training them on how to keep safe during the pandemic.

We also thank you as our donor for enabling us to purchase food that we distributed to each child’s family.  It is a big blessing to visit someone and offer food.   For each of the 27 families we visited, we bought 3 litres of cooking oil, 10 kilogrammes of beans, 10 kilogrammes of maize, 8 kilogrammes of maize meal and 10 packets of Sanitary pads, body cream and face masks.

The food donation eased the food burden that has increased tremendously due to the prolonged school closure due to COVID-19.

Parents in poverty-stricken areas find it difficult to control their teen-age girls well when they are out of school and as a result, over a period of three months in lockdown due to COVID-19, 152,000 Kenyan teenage girls became pregnant.  Unfortunately, when we visited our sponsored families, we discovered that two of our own sponsored children became pregnant during the same period.  Nenkashe Education Centre offered counseling to the two teenagers and will monitor them ensure that they get adequate care and psychological support.

Schools may open soon and we have two candidates due to take national examinations.  One candidate is in Standard 8 and another in Form IV.  There is a lot of anxiety because many students have not prepared well as the government had closed the schools three months ago.  Many parents are also concerned over the health of their children as they feel that schools are not prepared to resume classes and protect their children from infection.

Thank you for your prayers and your contributions that have enabled us to reach out to our most needy families.  I pray that we all stay safe and healthy through this time of great uncertainty.
