During October and November, the FACES Surgical Team held a series of virtual evaluations for patients seeking surgical care for their cleft lips or palates. For months prior, local healthcare workers in Northern Peru identified patients suffering from clefts who came from poverty-stricken families. Based on a collaboration with the Peruvian Medical Community that is 15 years old, these patients were referred to FACES.
FACES Surgeons and Speech Language Pathologists volunteered their Saturday mornings for 6 consecutive weeks to evaluate a total of 75 patients. From this group, 40 will receive surgery during the campaign in January 2025.
Some of the families catch the FACES campaign at just the right moment for their child to receive a surgery at the ideal month of their development. However, there are others who, due to incredible isolation, are behind in their cleft surgery timeline. FACES takes care of every patient, providing for any necessary speech therapy and social support for children who receive cleft lip or palate repairs later in life.
Dear reader, your financial contributions support efforts that change lives. If you would like see how truly remote these families are, consider watching this video presentation of three Peruvian children who received care from FACES.
Warmly,
Angela and the FACES Team
