The FACES Foundation is happy to report that we are on schedule in our planning of a Cleft Surgical Campaign to Northern Peru in January 2025. At this stage of our project, we have confirmed participation of 1) the host hospital and its providers, 2) of the local Lions Clubs, and 3) trained facial plastic surgeons, nurses, and speech language pathologists who will travel with the team. We are continuing fundraising efforts to secure medical supplies and rent a portable anesthesia machine.
In the midst of this preparation, virtual speech therapy sessions are on-going. This year, the FACES Speech Therapy team has conducted 166 sessions at no cost to the patients or their families. Our certified Peruvian Speech Therapy Assistant says, “In total, 18 patients got our free service and our model works if the family is committed to attend every week and do the continuous practice at home. [Providing virtual lessons] is great because families do not have to travel long distances and spend money and time on transportation… Once kids notice their speech changing, they start blooming. Their self-esteem changes and also, they have a better experience at school.”
We appreciate the support of so many generous individuals whose donations are changing the lives of children in rural Peru.
