A New Academic Year at Kushadevi Model School

By Imogen Flatau | Fundraising and Development Manager

Kushadevi Model School has had another successful year, all of which is made possible by your generous support. Unlike here in the UK, in Nepal the new academic year starts mid-April. Our students are settling into their new classes and we have a fresh influx of students who have joined us. We have given all our students a warm welcome back to school, and there is a buzz about the classrooms, excitement about the year ahead.

We will continue to provide quality education to the students at Kushadevi Model School which will open up new opportunities for each and every student. We do this with teacher training days; a clear management structure and support system for staff; outreach work with the wider community not only working to advocate the benefits of education but also to support families struggling to send their children to school; Ride for Life providing bikes to new students who live further away. This work increases the attendance rates and the quality of education our team provide.

With our expert team of drama facilitators, we also continue to facilitate the Act on Education programme building confidence amongst students to articulate the barriers that they face in gaining an education and then to work with the whole community to find solutions to these issues identified. Act on Education is vital to ensuring that all the programmes we run in school remains relevant and can have the most impact. Because of your support and the kind generosity of grants from trusts and foundations we can continue this vital work for nearly 400 children in Kushadevi.

We have been fortunate enough during this last school holiday to be able to run and facilitate a 'creative kids camp'. Students were invited to take part in theatre workshops, story telling classes and art sessions. They presented some lovely drama performances, spoken word poetry and art work as this they had an opportunity to have fun with their friends and create lasting memories. Having a chance to attend kids camps like this is essential to the well-being of our students. Many of them have to work each day before and after school which leaves little time for play and studies, they are also expected to work during the holidays on the farms and in the local shops and building sites. So the chance to spend a few hours focusing on fun imaginative and relaxing activities lets them be just children, a chance they often miss out on.

It is fantastic that you chosen to be a part of this project enabling much of this programme to continue serving the brilliant children and families at Kushadevi School. Thank you.
