Rebuilding Hope After the Bukavu Fire

By FERDINAND | CORDINATOR

On August 26, a devastating fire swept through the Cimpunda and Mosala neighborhoods of Bukavu, Democratic Republic of Congo, destroying more than 1,000 homes and leaving nearly 2,000 vulnerable families without shelter or basic belongings. Children and parents were forced to face the aftermath with almost nothing, just as the new school year approached. For families who had already been living with economic hardship, losing their homes, food, clothing, and school materials has created an even deeper crisis. This project was created to respond to that urgent need with dignity, compassion, and practical support.

With a total fundraising goal of $65,000, the project will provide emergency shelter materials, food, hygiene kits, and school supplies to families affected by the fire. At this stage, $0 has been raised, and the project is currently in its preparation and resource-mobilization phase. We are identifying trainers, learners, local volunteers, and the most vulnerable families who will participate in or benefit from the planned activities. Implementation is scheduled to begin in November 2025, with local volunteers supporting the identification and distribution process. Funds raised will be used primarily to provide essential assistance and support the safe and transparent delivery of the project.

We believe that recovery begins when families are given the opportunity to regain stability and dignity. A tarp can provide protection from the rain; a food package can help a parent feed their children; a school kit can give a child the confidence to return to learning after losing almost everything. Through our collaboration with GlobalGiving, we are strengthening our fundraising efforts and reaching a wider community of international supporters. We are confident that this partnership can help us move closer to our $65,000 goal, but we cannot do it alone. We warmly invite donors, partners, friends, and humanitarian supporters to stand with the families of Bukavu and help turn this moment of tragedy into a beginning of hope. Every contribution, whatever its size, can help a family take one step toward rebuilding. We sincerely thank GlobalGiving and every donor supporting this mission and believing that families affected by disaster deserve not only emergency assistance, but the opportunity to rebuild their lives with dignity.
