Project Title: Help 200 families defeat malaria in Ikota community, Nigeria

With the sponsorship received during the Global Giving December challenge, Development Africa implemented a malaria elimination programme in the Ikota Community, Eti-Osa LGA in Lagos State. The Ikota community was selected as the low-income area lacks drainage systems, creating abundant breeding grounds for mosquitoes and the majority of residents are from very low-income backgrounds.
What we achieved:
• 400 mosquito bed nets were distributed to mothers who attended the programme (two nets per household), representing 200 low-income families from the Ikota community. Some of the bed nets were hung by DA volunteers in the beneficiary’s homes.
• Targeted malaria testing was provided for 52 symptomatic mothers, children and expectant mothers with suspected malaria using the Rapid Diagnostic Test (RDT) kits and malaria treatment was given using the recommended Artemisinin-based Combination Therapy (ACT). 48 additional tests have been provided to the Family Care Ikota Medical Centre and the next 48 patients from low-income backgrounds will be given free testing and treatment.
• All pregnant women attending the programme were administered Intermittent Preventive Treatment (IPT).
• Two lectures were given to over 160 project attendants (family members and community agents) in malaria control and prevention training by Dr. Hugo Onumajuru, Medical Director of the Family Care Ikota Medical Centre. The training included mosquito net demonstrations, net care, current malaria prevention techniques, and sanitation/environmental awareness.
• Over 200 educational flyers on malaria prevention and awareness were distributed to the programme beneficiaries.
The Ikota community was very appreciative of the programme and the beneficiaries expressed deep gratitude to each person who contributed towards making the programme a reality.
Continued malaria education on effective prevention practices will be given to community members when they attend the Family Care Ikota Medical Centre and we expect a reduction in malaria cases due to the mosquito bed net distribution, education and malaria awareness.
