Cupcake Bakers Shine

By Sharon Doherty | Project Leader

Market Day

Most everyone loves to eat cupcakes. Carla and Azucena love to bake and decorate them!

Since August 2015 Carla, the pre-school teacher at the San Miguel School for Special Education and her younger sister Azucena, a high school student at the same school, both of whom are deaf, have been working hard at perfecting recipes and decorating techniques for the cupcakes featured for sale in their new business.  The business is named "Cupcakes de Carla y Amigas". Following months of practice, the two young women with the help of a few friends from the school, debuted their beautiful cupcakes at the San Miguel de Allende Saturday Organic Market twice during the month of December. The cupcakes were well received by the community, selling out entirely both times, but no one was surprised. The cupcakes, apart from being light and tasty, are each a work of art and too hard to resist!

Volunteers, Laura Ramirez and Linda Slavin, were instrumental in setting the high standard of cupcake baking and decorating that was achieved by Carla and Azucena, providing many hours of hands-on demonstrating and gentle coaching...and also a little cupcake taste testing that happily goes along with the job.

Carla and Azucena's short term plans are to continue selling Cupcakes de Carla y Amigas at the Saturday market, however, their long term goal is to sell the cupcakes at a bistro/cafe managed and operated by them and other students of the school for the deaf. This would give the young women an even better opportunity to showcase their very special creations and would also give other students the opportunity for employment in a cooperative business.

We hope that you will share in the dream of these two fine young women and help to make the bistro/cafe business a reality. Your generosity will help make this happen.
