Meet Gilbert

By Christopher Buck | Project Leader

Meet Gilbert
Meet Gilbert

Gilbert is a 16 years old albino boy. His story is not that uncommon.  He was raised in a home where neither parent had full-time jobs – only temporary ones.  His father was an alcoholic. Because his parents could not afford to give the school fees and requirements, Gilbert was forced to drop out of school at the age of 10. Gilbert was driven out of his home by the violence of the father, and was fortunate to find a job grazing the cows and goats of a rich woman in a nearby village.

Gilbert was paid in food. He became frustrated when all his clothes got torn doing his job as a herder and he could not afford to replace or mend them as he was not earning any money in addition to the food.

Gilbert was approached by a man from the village who wanted introduce him to another man who had just shown up in the village who claimed he wanted to give Gilbert a job and a lot of money.   He later overheard the man saying that if he would succeed to taking the boy to Tanzania, he would get a lot of money.

This scared Gilbert and he ran away to the streets of Kabale.  Unfortunately, it was not any safer in the larger city of Kabale, where he was again pursued by men who wanted to kidnap him.

Fortunately for Gilbert, word of him and his situation also made it to Michael Sabiiti, Country Director for Humanity Healing International, who was able to rescue him from his pursuers and place him in the Albino Rescue Program.

Gilbert was suffering from Typhoid when rescued.  He was treated and recovered fully.

Gilbert is currently happily enrolled in a vocational school where he is learning the trade of auto mechanics, as well as finishing his rudimentary education.

Our Gratitude to our friends and sponsors at Global Giving.  Gilbert now has a chance for a safe and productive life thanks to your generosity.
