This report details the development and impact of educational workshops given to pregnant and breastfeeding mothers in the El Ferry neighborhood of Barranquilla between August and December. The main objective of these workshops was to provide essential tools for comprehensive maternal and child well-being, addressing health, nutrition, and economic empowerment.
A holistic approach to motherhood
The workshops were designed using a participatory methodology that ensured the practical application of knowledge. Four fundamental pillars for child-rearing and the personal development of mothers were addressed in an interconnected manner: Breastfeeding, Complementary Feeding, Entrepreneurship, and Mental Health.
1. Strengthening child health and nutrition
Significant progress was made in the adoption of healthy practices. The sessions on breastfeeding allowed mothers to dispel myths and acquire skills in latching techniques and coping with difficulties, reinforcing their commitment to exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life.
Subsequently, complementary feeding workshops focused on food safety and optimal nutrition. Mothers learned how to use low-cost local resources to prepare nutritious and developmentally appropriate foods for their children from six months onwards, ensuring a smooth transition to solid foods.
2. Psychosocial and economic empowerment
The project not only focused on physical health but also prioritized the emotional well-being and economic autonomy of participants:
Maternal Mental Health: Spaces for listening and mutual support were created, which were crucial for the population. These circles allowed pregnant and breastfeeding women to identify and manage stress, anxiety, and symptoms of postpartum sadness or depression. The simple act of sharing their experiences helped reduce isolation and strengthen their community network.
Entrepreneurship: The pursuit of economic independence was encouraged through entrepreneurship workshops. Mothers identified skills they could monetize and received basic training in structuring business ideas, pricing, and product promotion. This has laid the foundation for them to generate their own income, thereby improving the economic sustainability of their households.
The educational sessions at El Ferry have been a success in terms of participation and knowledge transfer. There has been an increase in mothers' confidence and their ability to make informed decisions about crucial aspects of parenting.
The project has a twofold impact: it improves the quality of life of babies through proper health and nutrition practices and, at the same time, empowers women to be agents of change in their families and communities.
